Summary

Fixes CVE-2025-7783 (form-data used Math.random() for multipart boundaries) by forcing request@2.88.2's form-data@~2.3.2 dependency to 2.5.4.

Changes

  • package.json: scoped resolution "form-data@npm:~2.3.2": "2.5.4".
  • scripts/ecosystem-ci/existing-resolutions.js: register the new resolution in EXISTING_RESOLUTIONS.
  • yarn.lock: regenerated; form-data is now only 2.5.4 and 4.0.5, so no version in the CVE range remains.

Why a resolution

request@2.88.2 pins form-data@~2.3.2, and 2.5.4 is outside that range, so a lockfile-only update cannot move it. The resolution is scoped to that range rather than a global override.

Verification

  • yarn install --immutable passes.
  • yarn why form-data shows only 2.5.4 and 4.0.5.
  • scripts/ecosystem-ci/existing-resolutions.test.ts passes.

Walkthrough

The root package.json changes the form-data resolution from a global version pin to a requester-scoped ~2.3.2 resolution pinned to 2.5.4. Ecosystem CI preserves this resolution when creating sandbox package files.

The root resolutions block applies version 2.5.4 only to requesters declaring the ~2.3.2 range. Ecosystem CI excludes this resolution from sandbox package files.

This updates the vulnerable form-data resolution for the affected requester range while keeping ecosystem sandbox resolution handling aligned. No concrete current-head merge-blocking risk remains.

Address review feedback on the CVE-2025-7783 fix: the previous unscoped
resolutions entry forced form-data to 4.0.6 for every consumer, including
the deprecated request package, which declares form-data ~2.3.2 and was
never validated against form-data's 4.x API. Scope the override to that
specific range instead, resolving it to 2.5.4 (the patched 2.x release)
so other consumers (already on patched 4.x versions) are left untouched.

🤖 I am the Storybook contribution review bot; a human maintainer approved this message before it was posted.
Review phase: Runtime verification (stage 3 of 3)

We are trying out something new: a three-stage automated review - architecture, then code quality, then runtime verification - that runs on a PR before a human maintainer looks at it closely. A maintainer still reads this and still makes the call; the aim is that by the time they do, the reachability and evidence work is already done. Tell us how it lands for you, that feedback is genuinely useful to us right now.

Hi @anupamme,

Thank you for the targeted CVE update. Runtime verification at head 30193e0ba5533c41a0d776eb748734a1cc9b43fd confirmed that the immutable install succeeds, request@2.88.2 resolves form-data@2.5.4, the multipart request works over loopback, and the patched boundary-generation path does not call Math.random().

One directly relevant repository check still fails:

yarn vitest run --config scripts/vitest.config.ts scripts/ecosystem-ci/existing-resolutions.test.ts

The root package.json adds the form-data@npm:~2.3.2 resolution, but scripts/ecosystem-ci/existing-resolutions.js does not contain the matching key. The test reports a symmetric-difference size of 1 instead of 0.

Please synchronize this scoped resolution in EXISTING_RESOLUTIONS. Stage 3 result: changes requested. When you push the companion update, this PR will re-enter runtime verification at the new head SHA. The security resolution itself looks correct; this request is for the missing repository consistency update.

The form-data@npm:~2.3.2 resolution added for CVE-2025-7783 was missing
from EXISTING_RESOLUTIONS, causing existing-resolutions.test.ts to fail.

🤖 I am the Storybook contribution review bot. This message was posted automatically; a human maintainer makes the final decision.

We are trying a three-stage automated review: architecture, code quality, and runtime verification. This message states which stages ran and which were skipped. Messages are posted automatically, and a human maintainer makes the final decision. Please tell us whether the feedback and evidence are useful.

Hi @anupamme,

Thanks for the quick follow-up. Runtime verification re-ran at head d7ac8a38a1546cda4efe144f2c3ae9a24a4951b9, and the automated review now passes.

  • Earlier request resolved: scripts/ecosystem-ci/existing-resolutions.test.ts passes now that form-data@npm:~2.3.2 is in EXISTING_RESOLUTIONS.
  • Install: yarn install --immutable succeeds without lockfile changes.
  • Security fix: request@2.88.2 now resolves form-data@2.5.4 (it was 2.3.3 on next). The only form-data versions left in yarn.lock are 2.5.4 and 4.0.6, so no version in the CVE-2025-7783 range remains.
  • Behavior: a multipart request through request over loopback still returns 200 with an intact body, and boundary generation makes no Math.random() calls.

Stages: architecture and code quality were skipped because the diff only changes dependency configuration. Runtime verification (stage 3) passed. This re-run covered only the earlier request and the original checks; the full test suite and build were not re-run.

Two things for the maintainers and you:

  • GitHub reports that this branch conflicts with next (most likely yarn.lock). Please rebase or merge next so CI can run.
  • @valentinpalkovic's earlier review asked to update only yarn.lock rather than add a resolution to package.json. The PR now uses a scoped resolution for request's form-data@~2.3.2 range instead of a global override. A maintainer will confirm whether that answers the review.

Merged next into this branch and resolved the yarn.lock conflict (took next's lockfile and regenerated it with yarn install). The diff against next is now limited to the form-data entries plus the package.json / existing-resolutions.js lines. yarn install --immutable passes, yarn why form-data shows only 2.5.4 and 4.0.5, and existing-resolutions.test.ts passes.

On @valentinpalkovic's lockfile-only question: request@2.88.2 depends on form-data@~2.3.2, and 2.5.4 is outside that range, so a lockfile-only update can't move it. The scoped resolution (form-data@npm:~2.3.2 → 2.5.4) is the minimal way to do it without a global override. Happy to change approach if you'd prefer something else.

Hi @anupamme,

Thanks for merging next. Runtime verification re-ran at the new head d7956c6d53b98b6d0d611564a61eca344ec5e019, and it passes again.

  • Install: yarn install --immutable succeeds without lockfile changes.
  • Security fix: request@2.88.2 resolves form-data@2.5.4 (next still resolves 2.3.3). The only form-data versions left in yarn.lock are 2.5.4 and 4.0.5, so no version in the CVE-2025-7783 range remains.
  • Behavior: a multipart request through request over loopback returns 200 with both parts intact.
  • Test: scripts/ecosystem-ci/existing-resolutions.test.ts passes.

Stages: architecture and code quality were skipped because the diff only changes dependency configuration. Runtime verification (stage 3) passed. The full test suite and build were not re-run.

@valentinpalkovic's earlier review is still open. A maintainer will decide whether the scoped resolution answers it.
