Follow-up to the review on #36088, which named two gaps on next. This covers both.

What I did

WebView.scrollToAnchor always scrolls with behavior: 'smooth'. That is an animation, and it runs even when the user has asked the system for less motion. This adds a check and falls back to an instant scroll.

I used 'instant' rather than 'auto' on purpose. 'auto' defers to the scroll-behavior CSS property, so a docs page that sets scroll-behavior: smooth would animate again for the same user. 'instant' cannot be overridden that way.

The guard follows getPreferredColorScheme in code/core/src/theming/utils.ts, which checks that matchMedia exists before calling it, because preview code also runs outside a browser.

The second half is coverage. scrollToAnchor and PreviewWithSelection.onNavigateUrl had no tests at all before this: WebView.test.ts covered only htmlLang. The onNavigateUrl tests go through the channel rather than calling the method, because the dispatch is the part that carries the behaviour: Channel.emit runs handleEvent on the same instance, so the preview's own listener fires for the preview's own emit.

Every test was checked by breaking the source, not only by passing:

  • restoring behavior: 'smooth' fails only "scrolls instantly when the user prefers reduced motion"; the other 10 stay green
  • removing channel.on(NAVIGATE_URL, ...) fails only "scrolls the view to the anchor when NAVIGATE_URL is emitted on the channel"
  • removing the url.startsWith('#') guard fails only "does not scroll for a url that is not an in-page anchor"

What this does not cover

The same gap exists in nine other places that scroll with behavior: 'smooth', among them A11yContext.tsx, component-testing/components/Panel.tsx, TabList.tsx, useHighlights.ts, Focus.tsx and TourGuide/HighlightElement.tsx. I left them alone so this PR stays the one file the review pointed at. If you would rather have a shared helper and all call sites fixed together, say so and I will open that as a follow-up.

The tests run in happy-dom, so they assert the call and its arguments. They do not assert that the page really moved.

Testing

The changes in this PR are covered in the following automated tests:

  • stories
  • unit tests
  • integration tests
  • end-to-end tests

Manual testing

  1. Run a sandbox: yarn task --task sandbox --start-from auto --template react-vite/default-ts
  2. Open the "Configure your project" docs page in the sandbox
  3. Use the sidebar search, type the name of a heading on that page, and select the heading result. The preview scrolls to it smoothly.
  4. Open DevTools, go to Rendering, and set "Emulate CSS media feature prefers-reduced-motion" to reduce
  5. Scroll the preview back to the top and repeat step 3. The preview now jumps to the heading with no animation. The heading it lands on is the same one.

Move matchMedia mock setup out of individual test cases.

Declare the mock before the test cases. Configure each behavior in a beforeEach block, or in nested describe blocks with their own beforeEach blocks. This keeps mock lifecycle behavior consistent across the suite.

As per coding guidelines, “Place all mocks at the top of the test file before any test cases,” “Implement mock behaviors in beforeEach blocks in Vitest tests,” and “Avoid inline mock implementations within test cases in Vitest tests.”

Both are style nitpicks, and I checked each against the repository before answering. I am not applying either, and here is the evidence rather than a preference.

On vi.mocked(): vi.spyOn already returns a typed MockInstance, so vi.mocked(heading.scrollIntoView) would re-derive the type that the line above just produced. vi.mocked() exists for values the compiler cannot see as mocks, which in practice means an import from a module replaced by vi.mock(). That is how this repository uses it: every occurrence I found near a vi.spyOn wraps such an import, for example vi.mocked(withTelemetry) in cli/tools/register.test.ts, vi.mocked(find.up) in PNPMProxy.catalog.test.ts, and vi.mocked(getStorybookInfo) in telemetry/storybook-metadata.test.ts. Meanwhile const x = vi.spyOn(...) appears 111 times across 45 test files. This is also the same suggestion you made on #36088 on 31 August, and the answer has not changed.

On hoisting the matchMedia stub into beforeEach: the three cases need three different values, matches: true, matches: false, and matchMedia absent entirely. Hoisting them means three nested describe blocks with one beforeEach each, which is more code and moves the value under test away from the assertion that depends on it. The closest precedent in this repository does exactly what I did, with the same API: code/core/src/theming/tests/util.test.js stubs matchMedia inside each it() of the getPreferredColorScheme block, for the same reason. Repo-wide, vi.stubGlobal appears inside a test body 84 times, inside a hook 15 times, and at file top level 9 times.

The lifecycle is not left to chance: vi.restoreAllMocks() and vi.unstubAllGlobals() run in afterEach in this describe, and clearMocks: true is set in code/vitest.shared.ts.

If either rule is written down in this repository and I have missed it, point me at the file and I will follow it. I looked: .agents/guidelines/ holds only comments-and-jsdoc.md, and there is no .coderabbit.yaml here.

Separately, for anyone reading the checks rather than the review: the typescript-validation failure on the previous head was mine, an unused @ts-expect-error that vitest's own typecheck does not flag. It is fixed in ed3ea91 and CI is re-running.

One correction to my own answer: I said neither rule is written down in this repository. That was based on checking .agents/guidelines/ only, and it was incomplete.

AGENTS.md in the repo root does cover this, at the "stubbing globals" section: "For a value used by every test in a file, stub it in beforeEach and unstub in afterEach; for a one-off override, call vi.stubGlobal inside that single test."

The three matchMedia stubs here are one-off overrides — reduce, no-preference, and unavailable each need a different value — so they belong inside their own tests under that rule, and afterEach(() => vi.unstubAllGlobals()) is already there as the same section asks. Please disregard the file and call counts in my previous comment; this line is the actual basis.

vi.mocked is not mentioned in AGENTS.md at all, so the first point stands as answered.

🤖 I am the Storybook contribution review bot; a human maintainer approved this message before it was posted.
Review phase: Architecture review (stage 1 of 3)

We are trying out something new: a three-stage automated review - architecture, then code quality, then runtime verification - that runs on a PR before a human maintainer looks at it closely. A maintainer still reads this and still makes the call; the aim is that by the time they do, the reachability and evidence work is already done. Tell us how it lands for you, that feedback is genuinely useful to us right now.

Hi @TheSeydiCharyyev,

Thank you for the careful reduced-motion fix. The stage-1 review confirmed that WebView is the correct owner for anchor scrolling, that the call-time media query is appropriate, and that instant is the right behavior when reduced motion is enabled.

I am requesting one architecture change before this can continue. This branch adds a new prefersReducedMotion() helper, but Storybook core already has the same guarded media-query behavior in code/core/src/backgrounds/utils.ts as isReduceMotionEnabled(). Keeping both creates duplicate cross-cutting browser logic.

Please move that existing behavior into an internal, browser-safe shared module, for example code/core/src/shared/utils/is-reduced-motion-enabled.ts, and import it from both code/core/src/backgrounds/decorator.ts and code/core/src/preview-api/modules/preview-web/WebView.ts. Please keep the helper internal and retain the focused preview-web tests.

Stage 1 result: changes requested. When you push the restructure, this PR will re-enter the architecture stage at the new head SHA. Thanks again for improving this accessibility path.

Done in d3d0559. Behaviour is unchanged on both sides — this is a move, not a fix.

isReduceMotionEnabled now lives in code/core/src/shared/utils/is-reduced-motion-enabled.ts and both backgrounds/decorator.ts and preview-web/WebView.ts import it. The body moved verbatim, so backgrounds does exactly what it did before. My prefersReducedMotion and the globalWindow destructure in WebView are gone.

I kept the function name isReduceMotionEnabled instead of matching the file name you suggested. Renaming it would touch backgrounds/decorator.ts for no behavioural reason. Tell me if you'd rather have isReducedMotionEnabled everywhere and I'll rename both.

I added a colocated test next to the helper. Almost every module in shared/utils has one, and this behaviour had none — backgrounds has no utils.test.ts at all. Four cases: the query string it asks for, reduce, no-preference, and no matchMedia. The preview-web tests are untouched, as you asked.

One thing the move surfaced that I did not change. decorator.ts:20 calls the helper at module scope:

const transitionStyle = isReduceMotionEnabled() ? '' : 'transition: background-color 0.3s;';

That runs once at import, so backgrounds keeps whatever the setting was when the module loaded, while WebView asks at scroll time. Sharing the helper does not change either call site. For someone who toggles the OS setting mid-session the backgrounds transition stays wrong until reload, but fixing it is a behaviour change in backgrounds and does not belong in this PR. I can open it separately if you want it.

On wiring: making the shared helper always return false fails both its own test and scrolls instantly when the user prefers reduced motion in WebView.test.ts, so the preview-web test really goes through the shared module now rather than a local copy.

The move broke the build, and the cause was the module-scope call I said I'd leave alone. Fixed in 0b2a7a8.

d3d0559 turned 20 CI jobs red with TypeError: isReduceMotionEnabled is not a function, thrown from core/dist/csf/index.js — that's decorator.ts calling the helper at module scope. Before the move the helper was bundled together with the decorator. Once WebView imported it as well, it landed in a shared chunk, and the decorator's top-level call ran before that chunk had initialised.

So the call now happens inside the useEffect that uses it. As a side effect backgrounds picks up a change to the OS setting instead of keeping whatever it was at import — the gap I mentioned yesterday and said I wouldn't touch here. I was wrong to treat it as separate: it became load-bearing the moment the helper moved.

On 0b2a7a8 tests--linux, tests-stories--linux, the portable-stories jobs and the Vue, Svelte, Angular and Lit sandboxes are green again.

Still red: the four React vitest sandboxes, all on src/stories/renderers/react/test-fn.stories.tsx. That isn't from this PR — #36248 fails the same five tests in the same file.

Refresh the background style when reduced-motion changes.

If the OS preference changes while this decorator remains mounted, the effect does not rerun because the preference is not a dependency and no change listener updates it. The injected CSS can therefore keep transition: background-color 0.3s; after reduced motion is enabled. Subscribe to the media query and refresh the style when its value changes.

I looked at both. Modal.tsx and useLandmarkIndicator.ts use useMediaQuery, which listens to the media query and re-renders when the user changes the setting. isReduceMotionEnabled() reads it once, so moving them to it would drop that update. I'd keep both on useMediaQuery and leave this PR as it is. Should I open a separate PR with a small useReducedMotion() hook on top of useMediaQuery for these two?
