Closes #

What I did

Note

This follows discussion #36467. It's ready for review as one PR. Once the direction is approved, I'll split it into the stacked PRs described under "How it would land" if you'd rather merge it in pieces.

Storybook core no longer uses Babel or recast to read or write story and config files. storybook/internal/babel is removed, along with the @babel/generator, @babel/parser, @babel/traverse, @babel/types and recast dependencies. There is no fallback path and no frozen Babel copy.

  • CsfFile, CsfObject (+ discovery), ConfigFile and ConfigObject read an oxc-parser ESTree and write with span-based magic-string edits. Code an edit does not touch stays byte-identical.
  • The docs enrichCsf, vitestTransform, componentTransform and save-story all use text edits. Each generated Vitest test() keeps a source mapping back to its story.
  • New foundation in code/core/src/csf-tools/estree/:
    • ast.ts: parsing helpers.
    • scope.ts: a scope analyzer. The OXC JS API exposes no scope info, so this mirrors the Babel getBinding / constant / referencePaths semantics.
    • editor.ts: list and statement edits that follow the surrounding layout.
  • Every former Babel consumer is ported:
    • story-shape;
    • renderer and framework docgen (React manifest, Vue, web components including the story snippet generator, Angular);
    • TanStack's server-code elimination;
    • addon-vitest config updates;
    • CLI automigrations and codemods;
    • lib/codemod and create-storybook;
    • mock extraction in both builders;
    • the sandbox scripts.
  • Babel stays only where it compiles user code (@storybook/nextjs, ember) and in two docgen tests that run @babel/core directly.

Results (measured before the rebase onto the latest next)

next this PR
storybook index (internal UI) 1.65 s 0.84 s 2.0x
dev --smoke-test (median) 4.76 s 3.87 s ~1.2x (noisy)
full storybook build ~38.9 s ~36.0 s ~1.1x
storybook npm unpacked 17.75 MiB 15.50 MiB −13%
storybook npm packed 5.29 MiB 4.89 MiB −8%

The per-operation numbers below come from running both implementations over all 587 story files in the repo. They were measured before the Babel implementation was deleted.

Babel OXC
Indexing 579 ms 113 ms 5.1x
enrichCsf + source map 1,212 ms 255 ms 4.8x
vitestTransform 683 ms 216 ms 3.2x
  • Parity is 0 mismatches for all three operations.
  • The scope analyzer matched Babel on all 99,828 bindings in 3,717 repo files.
  • scope.test.ts pins the Babel-specific rules. Examples: type references count, export counts as a reference, and functions in loop bodies are not constant.
  • The internal UI index.json (1,766 entries) is byte-identical.
  • Rebased on the latest next, which also ports what next added since: the Web Components snippet generator, the shared authoredSource, license-header handling, the save-story identifier checks, the single-parse CSF plugin (Addon-docs: Skip re-parsing untransformed stories in the CSF plugin #36468), and the legacy .story annotation removal (CSF: Remove legacy .story annotations #36764).
  • Locally, all 48 projects pass compile and check. The unit suite passes 14,643 tests. The 4 failures are environment-only and in files this PR doesn't touch: 3 SvelteKit dev-public-env tests need generated .svelte-kit files, and 1 format-existing-file test fails on the local Node 25.

How it would land. Commits are split by area. Review the diff commit by commit.

  1. ESTree layer and scope analyzer. This only adds code, so it builds on its own.
  2. The switch: csf-tools, story-shape, core helpers, then each package. The csf-tools node types change in one step, so these commits only build together.
  3. Babel and recast removal, plus the MIGRATION.md entry.

Behavior and API changes (see the new MIGRATION.md entry):

  • docs.source.originalSource is now the exact source text instead of Babel-regenerated code.
  • Untouched code keeps its formatting in automigration output. Inserted code follows the surrounding layout.
  • Error messages show message (line:column) instead of Babel code frames.
  • csf-tools exposes ESTree nodes:
    • CsfFile._ast and the NodePath fields are removed.
    • CsfObject.get / set / transform take ESTree expressions plus parseExpression / printExpression.
    • CsfEnricher receives the new CsfFile.
  • Community packages that import storybook/internal/babel stop loading. storybook-solidjs-vite imports recast and types from it, so the solid sandbox's Chromatic job fails until that package moves to csf-tools or its own Babel. mocking-utils keeps babelParser as a deprecated alias of parseModuleAst, because storybook-builder-rsbuild imports it.

Testing

The changes in this PR are covered in the following automated tests:

  • stories
  • unit tests
  • integration tests
  • end-to-end tests

Manual testing

Caution

This section is mandatory for all contributions. If you believe no manual test is necessary, please state so explicitly. Thanks!

To check it locally:

  1. Compile: yarn nx run-many -t compile.
  2. Run cd code && node core/dist/bin/dispatcher.js index --config-dir ./.storybook -o /tmp/index.json. Run the same command on next and compare the outputs: they should be identical.
  3. Run cd code && yarn storybook:ui. Open any story's Docs tab and check that source snippets and JSDoc descriptions still render.
  4. In the same UI, change a control and use "Save as new story". The new export should be appended to the story file, and the rest of the file should keep its formatting.
  5. In a sandbox (yarn task sandbox --template react-vite/default-ts --start-from auto), run npx storybook add @storybook/addon-vitest. vite.config.ts / vitest.config.ts should gain the Storybook project, with the rest of the file unchanged.

@Sidnioulz @shilman @JReinhold @huang-julien @vanessayuenn, this is ready for a look. I can't request reviewers from a fork, so I'm pinging you here.

I've rebased it on the latest next. The rebase also ports what landed there in the meantime: the Web Components snippet generator, the shared authoredSource, license-header handling, and the save-story identifier checks. Babel and recast are still fully removed from core.

The commits are split by area and are meant to be reviewed in order. The description explains how this would land as stacked PRs.

Could someone add the labels maintenance, ci:normal and qa:needed? Danger needs them, and ci:normal runs the sandboxes. I can't set labels from a fork. Thanks!

their numeric spans and route them to printExpression, even when textOf returns
undefined, so unknown-source nodes trigger printExpression’s error. Use isSpan
from the editor module; keep plain CsfValue objects, including objects with a
type property, on the printValue path.

Review comments at @code/core/src/csf-tools/estree/ast.ts:
- Around line 244-253: Update expressionFromSource to parse detached fragments
as TSX first and retry as TS when TSX parsing fails, rethrowing the original TSX
error if both attempts fail. Apply the same shared fragment parser in
unboundNames instead of calling parseModule directly, so detached syntax valid
only in TS remains supported.

keep existing renaming behavior for non-shorthand properties and

story-processing flow to after the replaceExport check, adding the key only when
replaceExport is true. Preserve the early return for non-rewritten exports so
their args and parameters statements are not removed.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Removing an exported handler function leaves a dangling export keyword.

remove(binding.node) removes only the FunctionDeclaration or ClassDeclaration span. In ESTree, that span starts at function or class. It does not include the parent ExportNamedDeclaration or ExportDefaultDeclaration.

Trigger:

export function serverHandler() { /* … */ }
export const fn = createServerFn().handler(serverHandler);

serverHandler has one reference, so the plugin removes its declaration. The output keeps export followed by the next statement. That output does not parse, so the Storybook build fails for that file.

Babel's path.remove() removed the whole export, so the old code did not produce this output. The variable branch below already checks for ExportNamedDeclaration. The function and class branch has no such check.

Update the function/class branch for `binding.kind` so removing an exported

`ExportDefaultDeclaration`; continue removing `binding.node` directly when it is

I couldn't reproduce this. Like Babel, the scope analyzer counts an export declaration as a reference to its binding, so an exported function or class always has at least two references and never reaches remove(binding.node). In your example, export function serverHandler stays intact and only the handler argument becomes __sb_fn(). I added regression tests for export function, export default function and export class to pin this down.

@kasperpeulen Yes, it's magic-string. SourceEditor (core/src/csf-tools/estree/editor.ts) keeps the original text and records span-based edits on top of it, so untouched code stays byte-identical — there's no reprinting of the AST.

Inserted code copies the indentation of the line it lands on (lineIndent/reindent), follows the file's quote style, and chooses single-line vs multi-line form based on the surrounding object. After each batch, commit() applies the edits and re-parses, so later edits keep accurate positions.

The save-story and codemod snapshot tests pass unchanged on this, which is the best evidence that the formatting survives.

(Written with Claude Code on my behalf; I reviewed it.)

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Add the type import only when the annotation is rewritten.

updateTypeTo calls getOrAddImport(type) even when apply is false. getOrAddImport then inserts ${type}, into the Storybook import. The annotation keeps its old type name, so the new specifier is never used.

This path runs whenever isSingleConstExport returns false. One example is export const A = Template.bind({}), B = Template.bind({}); with a Story annotation. The output then has an unused StoryObj or StoryFn import. Lint fails, and so does tsc with noUnusedLocals.

oxc-parser 0.127.0 parseSync filename TSX generic arrow angle bracket type assertion behavior official

💡 Result:

With `oxc-parser@0.127.0`, passing a `.tsx` filename makes `parseSync` parse the source as TypeScript with JSX; the filename is used to select the dialect. ([npmjs.com](https://www.npmjs.com/package/oxc-parser?activeTab=versions&utm_source=openai))

In TSX, an angle-bracket type assertion such as `<Foo>value` is ambiguous with JSX and is not the supported assertion form—use `value as Foo`. A generic arrow such as `<T>(x: T) => x` is also ambiguous; write `<T,>(x: T) => x` (or constrain `T`) to make the generic intent clear.

I found official npm documentation for `parseSync` and filename-based dialect selection, but not version-specific 0.127.0 parser tests or implementation establishing the exact AST/diagnostics for those snippets. So the syntax guidance above is the expected TSX distinction, not a verified claim about the exact 0.127.0 output. oxc-parser parseSync 0.127.0 parse errors returns program errors filename extension TypeScript JSX official documentation

💡 Result:

For **`oxc-parser` 0.127.0**, the official npm package page documents `parseSync(filename, sourceText, options?)`, returning a `ParseResult`. The filename extension helps determine the syntax dialect; `.ts` and `.tsx` are supported, and the result includes `program` and an `errors` array. ([npmjs.com](https://www.npmjs.com/package/oxc-parser?activeTab=versions&utm_source=openai))

```js
import { parseSync } from "oxc-parser";
const { program, errors } = parseSync("example.tsx", sourceText);
```

The npm page lists version **0.127.0**, but its API example is not explicitly pinned to that version. So it supports the described API generally, but does **not independently verify** that every detail is identical in the 0.127.0 published implementation. ([npmjs.com](https://www.npmjs.com/package/oxc-parser?activeTab=versions&utm_source=openai))

🌐 Web query:

github oxc-parser 0.127.0 parseSync source errors program parse filename tsx

💡 Result:

For **`oxc-parser@0.127.0`**, the expected JavaScript usage is:

```js
import { parseSync } from "oxc-parser";
const filename = "Component.tsx";
const sourceText = `
  const App = () => <div>Hello</div>;
`;
const { program, errors } = parseSync(filename, sourceText);
console.log(program); // parsed AST
console.log(errors);  // parser errors, if any
```

`parseSync` takes **filename first, source text second**; the filename extension helps select the syntax dialect, so `.tsx` signals TSX parsing. The current package documentation confirms this API and result fields, and npm lists `0.127.0` as a published version. I couldn’t verify the exact `0.127.0` source or declarations from the available sources, so the API details above are documented for the package generally, not independently confirmed against that specific release. Babel parser plugins typescript jsx angle bracket type assertions generic arrow TSX ambiguity official documentation

💡 Result:

In Babel, configure **both** parser plugins to parse TSX:

```js
parserOpts: {
  plugins: ["typescript", "jsx"],
}
```

The `jsx` plugin enables JSX syntax; with JSX enabled, `<T>value` is ambiguous with a JSX element, so use TypeScript’s `value as T` assertion form in TSX. Babel’s TypeScript plugin documentation says that `isTSX: true` forcibly enables JSX parsing; without it, angle brackets are treated as legacy type assertions. ([babeljs.io](https://babeljs.io/docs/babel-plugin-syntax-typescript/?utm_source=openai))

Generic arrow functions also need syntax that distinguishes them from JSX—for example, `const fn = <T,>(x: T) => x`. Babel documents `disallowAmbiguousJSXLike` for rejecting JSX-ambiguous forms such as `<X> y` and `<X>() => {}`; it defaults to `false` and is intended to match `tsc` behavior in `.mts` and `.mjs` files. ([babeljs.io](https://babeljs.io/docs/babel-plugin-syntax-typescript/?utm_source=openai))

These docs establish Babel’s plugin options and the ambiguity; they don’t specifically document the `<T,>` workaround.

Parse raw .ts modules in TypeScript mode before falling back to TSX.

parseModuleAst always parses as file.tsx. Vite passes raw module source to getAutomockCode, and .ts is a supported mock target. For a valid .ts export such as export const identity = <T>(value: T) => value;, OXC reports an error and returns an empty program. automockModule then finds no exports, so the mock is not applied. The preview rewrite path can also leave sb.mock(import(...)) unchanged.

Suggested fix
-export const parseModuleAst = (code: string) => parseSync('file.tsx', code).program;
+export const parseModuleAst = (code: string) => {
+  const parsedAsTs = parseSync('file.ts', code);
+  if (!parsedAsTs.errors.some((error) => error.severity === 'Error')) {
+    return parsedAsTs.program;
+  }
+  return parseSync('file.tsx', code).program;
+};

Update parseModuleAst to parse source as TypeScript first and return that
program when parsing has no errors; fall back to TSX parsing only when
TypeScript parsing reports an error, so valid .ts syntax is preserved for
automocking and preview rewrites.

Fixed in f61fe73: parseModuleAst(code, fileName) goes through csf-tools' parseModule, so a .ts module uses the TS grammar, unnamed code tries TSX then TS, and syntax errors throw instead of yielding an empty program. All callers pass the module id.

Review phase: Thermo-nuclear code quality review (stage 2 of 3)

We are trying a three-stage automated review: architecture, code quality, and runtime verification. This message states which stages ran and which were skipped. Messages are posted automatically, and a human maintainer makes the final decision. Please tell us whether the feedback and evidence are useful.

Follow-up on 79403c7. Thanks, @EastonShin. Both CI findings from our addendum are resolved:

  • S2-N6: typescript-validation passes (CI and our local compile + check run). SourceEditor no longer exposes @jridgewell/remapping types.
  • S2-N7: we were partly wrong here. The loader keeps webpack's path, and the forward slashes come from the test fixture's magic-string map, so fixing the test was the right call.

This push adds no new blocking issues. We left one optional note inline. The other blocking items from our round 2 review are still open: S2-N1, Q2, Q3a, Q3b, Q4, Q6 and Q7. We aren't repeating them here; please reply in those threads or push changes. Architecture (stage 1) passed. Runtime verification (stage 3) hasn't run yet, because it starts only after code quality passes.

S2-N8 · optional · missing sourcesContent becomes an empty file

When the incoming map has no sourcesContent, content ?? '' turns "content unknown" (null) into "the original file is empty" (""). At 84b5879 this returned [null]. Devtools then show a blank original file instead of loading the real one. The same applies to name ?? '' in sources on the line above.

magic-string's SourceMap accepts (string | null)[], so the conversion isn't needed for typing. Consider passing composed.sourcesContent through unchanged and widening CsfSourceMap.sourcesContent to (string | null)[]. If '' is intended, a short comment would help.

Fixed in 861e4d3. composed.sourcesContent passes through unchanged, so a source whose content the input map did not carry stays null; generateMap returns a GeneratedMap typed with (string | null)[]. CsfSourceMap keeps string[] because Rollup's ExistingRawSourceMap requires it (the check fails otherwise); its JSDoc now says when an entry is null. The webpack loader test leaves the content unknown when the incoming map has none covers it.

Messages are posted automatically, and a human maintainer makes the final decision. Please tell us whether the feedback and evidence are useful.

Follow-up on 861e4d3. Thank you, @EastonShin, for the per-finding commits and thread replies; they made this round easy to check. All seven blocking items from round 2 are resolved: S2-N1, Q2, Q3a, Q3b, Q4, Q6 and Q7. The optional items are resolved too, and we accept your answer on the duplicate-story computed args key.

This push adds one new blocking issue, in SourceEditor.generateMap. Details are in the inline comment, along with three optional notes. Architecture (stage 1) passes for the new exports, estree/values.ts and the namedExportsRoot keys. Runtime verification (stage 3) hasn't run yet; it starts after code quality passes.

This is the third automated review round that asks for changes, and the last one. If anything blocking remains after your next push, we'll summarize it and hand the decision to a maintainer.

composed.sources from remapping lists only the original sources the output actually maps to, in order of first use, with sourceRoot already resolved into each name. It isn't index-aligned with input.sources, so input?.sources[index] can pick the wrong name. Probing generateMap at 79403c7 and at this head:

Case 79403c7 861e4d3
Input map sources: ['unused.ts', 'real.ts'], mappings reach only real.ts ['real.ts'] ['unused.ts'], paired with real.ts's content
Input map with sourceRoot: 'webpack:///src/' ['webpack:///src/Button.stories.tsx'] ['Button.stories.tsx'], and sourceRoot is lost
No input map, after a commit, generateMap({ source: 'Custom.tsx' }) ['Custom.tsx'] the editor's file name; source is ignored, because name is never nullish

Effect: the csf-plugin webpack loader ships these maps, so devtools, stack traces and coverage point at the wrong file whenever an earlier loader emits a multi-source map or a sourceRoot. formatCsf(csf, { sourceFileName }) also stops working once an edit has been committed. The current tests only cover a single-source input map without sourceRoot, so they all pass.

I understand the goal from your reply on the Windows thread: keep webpack's spelling of the path. To keep that, please match each composed source to the input entry by its resolved name (resolve input.sources[i] against input.sourceRoot the same way remapping does), not by position, and still use source when there is no input map. If exact spelling isn't needed, going back to options.inputSourceMap ? (name ?? '') : source and comparing separator-normalized paths in webpack-loader.test.ts also works. In either case, please add tests for a two-source input map whose first source is unused, an input map with sourceRoot, and sourceFileName after a committed edit.

Sorry for missing this round while the CI run was in progress. Fixed in 98bb0b6. The index pairing is gone: generateMap now gives remapping a loader, and for the original sources (depth 1) it sets context.source to the input map's own entries in the order remapping hands them over, so each composed source carries the name the input map spelled it with, unused sources are simply not visited, and sourceRoot is copied onto the result so the names resolve the same way. Without an input map the one original source is named after source, so formatCsf(csf, { sourceFileName }) works after a commit again. editor.test.ts has the three cases from your table (generateMap describe); all three fail on the previous head and pass now.

S2-R3-2 · optional · a failed second lookup leaves a silent duplicate

If this.inspect(sourcePath) finds nothing after the insert, the removal is skipped and move still returns success() with the member in both places. No current path gets here, because the prefix and same-parent cases are rejected earlier. Consider returning this.failure(...) (or throwing) in that branch, so a broken invariant shows up instead of producing a duplicate.

Done in 744684e: the second lookup now throws CsfObject: <path> was not found again after moving it instead of returning success with a duplicate. A failure result would not do here because the insert is already committed by then, so a broken invariant should surface rather than be reported as a diagnostic.

S1-R3-1 · optional · mixed import paths for csf-tools

This file imports estree/editor.ts relatively on line 10, but printMembers comes through the package self-reference storybook/internal/csf-tools, placed after the local ./utils.ts import. It's the only caller of the new printMembers export in csf-tools/index.ts. Consider adding printMembers to the relative import on line 10 and dropping the index.ts export, unless you want it public for addons.

Done in c84a837: printMembers comes through the relative estree/editor.ts import, and the index.ts export is removed; nothing outside core used it.

S2-R3-4 · optional · cosmetic · stacked doc comments

The InputSourceMap doc comment on this line now sits directly above GeneratedMap's doc comment, so GeneratedMap has two and InputSourceMap (line 30) has none. Moving this line down to just above export type InputSourceMap fixes it.

Fixed in 98bb0b6: the InputSourceMap doc comment sits above InputSourceMap again, and GeneratedMap has its own.

@kasperpeulen This is ready for another look. Head is e4858f823ce: the round-2 items above plus one follow-up, e4858f823ce, for the Windows source-map test (the fixture's magic-string map already spells the path with forward slashes, so the test now compares with the input map's sources).

CI on this head: typescript-validation, tests-unit (Linux), build--windows, and all sandbox create/dev/e2e/vitest/chromatic jobs pass. What is red is not from this PR:

  • tests-unit--windows: NPMProxy workspace test (fails on the base commit too) and a 10 s spawn timeout in cli.test.cjs that passed on the previous head.
  • benchmark-packages: npm install error (edgesOut), same as on next.
  • solidjs … chromatic: Chromatic CLI exit 23.
  • UI Tests: storybook-ui: no baseline for this branch.
  • Danger: labels and the team approval.

Every inline thread has a reply with its commit; none are left without one.

🤖 I am the Storybook contribution review bot. This message was posted automatically; a human maintainer makes the final decision.

Thanks @EastonShin for working through every round 2 item. One note on "none are left without a reply": the four threads from the round 3 review (5544619906, posted at 861e4d3) don't have replies yet, so they may have been missed. One of them is still blocking at e4858f8:

  • S2-R3-1 (blocking): generateMap pairs input source names by index (code/core/src/csf-tools/estree/editor.ts:168). Details and repro are in this thread. e4858f8 changes only webpack-loader.test.ts, so this line is unchanged.

The other three round 3 threads are optional suggestions.

This PR has now had three automated review rounds that asked for changes, which is our limit, so the bot won't start another round. A maintainer will decide the next step for S2-R3-1 and the PR.

Stages at e4858f8: architecture (stage 1) passed; code quality (stage 2) has the one open blocking item above; runtime verification (stage 3) has not run.

Round 3 is addressed at c84a8379848; I had missed those four threads because they were posted while the previous CI run was in progress, sorry about that.

  • S2-R3-1 (blocking): 98bb0b6. Source names are no longer paired by output index. generateMap hands remapping a loader that renames each original source (depth 1) to the input map's entry in the order remapping visits them, keeps sourceRoot, and names the single source after source when there is no input map. The three cases from the table are tests in editor.test.ts and fail on e4858f8.
  • S2-R3-2: 744684e, the second lookup throws instead of returning success with a duplicate.
  • S1-R3-1: c84a837, printMembers imported relatively, the index.ts export removed.
  • S2-R3-4: in 98bb0b6.

yarn nx run-many -t check -c production passes for the 47 projects locally; CI is running on this head.

@EastonShin thanks for the quick turnaround on the three rounds. I'd like to help get this over the line: would it be okay if I push commits directly to your branch (maintainerCanModify is on)? I have a few follow-ups from re-running the repros on e4858f8 that are easier to land as commits than as another round of threads.

Two things so we don't step on each other:

  • I'll only add commits on top, never force-push.
  • Could you avoid rebasing or force-pushing the branch while that's going on? If you'd rather keep the branch yours, I can open a PR against feat/oxc-csf-tools-poc on your fork instead, whichever you prefer.

I'll post the findings as a review on the current head either way.

@kasperpeulen Yes, please push directly to the branch, that's the fastest way. I won't rebase or force-push from here on.

One thing to know: before I saw your comment I had already pushed the round 3 fixes on top, so the head is now c84a8379848 (three commits after e4858f8: the source-name pairing in generateMap, the move invariant, and the printMembers import). Linear history, nothing rewritten, but if any of your follow-ups touch generateMap it's worth re-running the repros on this head first.

Conflicts: the relative-path guard in wrap-getAbsolutePath-utils.ts is ported
to the ESTree version, and the set-config-layout / wrap-getAbsolutePath test
expectations that next added are aligned with the editor's output (one-line
nested objects, the helper's JSDoc kept).

@kasperpeulen heads-up: the branch had conflicts with next (60 commits), so I merged next in as a merge commit, b6d68c15be1, on top of c84a8379848. No rebase and no force-push, so anything you push on top still applies.

The two conflicts were #36799 (relative addon paths are no longer wrapped with getAbsolutePath): the guard is ported to the ESTree version of wrap-getAbsolutePath-utils.ts, and its new test expectations are aligned with the editor's output, same as the other snapshots in those files (one-line nested objects, the helper's JSDoc kept where recast used to drop it). Compile and check -c production pass for the 47 projects.
